Confirming predictions: the invasive isopod Ianiropsis serricaudis Gurjanova, 1936 (Crustacea: Peracarida) is abundant in the Lagoon of Venice (Italy)

چکیده
Ianiropsis (G.O. Sars, 1897-99) is a complex and poorly understood genus composed of species similar to one another (BRUSCA & IVERSON, 1985), as well as similar to Janira (Leach, 1814). Species within this genus are mainly indigenous in the Pacific Ocean, apart from Ianiropsis breviremis (G.O. Sars, 1883), which occurs in the North-East Atlantic, and Ianiropsis palpalis (Barnard, 1914) on the South African coast. Recently, the species Ianiropsis serricaudis (Gurjanova, 1936) was identified in North America, on both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, and in Europe, so far only reported from England and the Netherlands (HOBBS et al. 2015 and references therein). The authors predicted that the species is probably more widespread than previously reported along North American and European coasts. This work confirms their hypothesis, providing evidence of the presence of I. serricaudis in an Adriatic lagoon.

First record of the colonial ascidian Didemnum vexillum Kott, 2002 in the Mediterranean: Lagoon of Venice (Italy)
Numerous colonies of the invasive colonial ascidian Didemnum vexillum Kott, 2002 have been found in the Lagoon of Venice (Italy) in 2012, overgrowing fouling organisms on maritime structures such as docks, pilings, and pontoons. This is the first record for the Mediterranean Sea. A survey conducted in July 2012 revealed that D. vexillum is present in the euhaline and tidally well flushed zones ...
متن کاملCollecting and Preserving Marine and Freshwater Isopoda (Crustacea: Peracarida)
BACKGROUND Isopoda are the most diverse Crustacea. In order to encourage the study of isopod crustaceans and their use in biodiversity studies, systematics, ecology, physiology and more, one needs to know who the isopods are and where to find them. NEW INFORMATION This is a short "how to" guide focusing on the free-living marine and freshwater isopods: where they live and how to collect and p...
متن کاملIsolation and characterization of microsatellite markers from the marine isopods Serolis paradoxa and Septemserolis septemcarinata (Crustacea: Peracarida).
This study reports the successful isolation of highly informative microsatellite marker sets for two marine serolid isopod species. For Serolis paradoxa (Fabricius, 1775), 13, and for Septemserolis septemcarinata (Miers, 1875), eight polymorphic microsatellite markers were isolated using the reporter genome enrichment protocol. The number of alleles per locus (N(A) ) and the observed heterozygo...
متن کاملCyathura odaliscae, a new species of anthurid isopod (Crustacea: Peracarida) from a brackish habitat on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
During a preliminary survey of a brackish mangrove habitat in the Terraba River delta on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, several adult and subadult specimens of a new anthurid isopod, Cyathura odaliscae n. sp. were discovered. The specimens were collected from decaying wood in low salinity conditions (<5‰). The unique shape and complexity of the male copulatory stylet of C. odaliscae distin...
متن کاملMarine exotic isopods from the Iberian Peninsula and nearby waters
Effective management of marine bioinvasions starts with prevention, communication among the scientific community and comprehensive updated data on the distribution ranges of exotic species. Despite being a hotspot for introduction due to numerous shipping routes converging at the Strait of Gibraltar, knowledge of marine exotics in the Iberian Peninsula is scarce, especially of abundant but smal...
